The hostel is in a good location and close to the bus stops for both hanging temples and caves. The staff speaks english and gives advices for sightseeing.
Difficult to find, entrance located inside a shop (look for the youth hostel sign on the building). The bathroom is not in a separate room but is obtained with a plastic/glass support, it´s functional but not cozy.

This is a basic Hostel in a good location. Nothing very special about it but it was clean and affordable.

I got food poisoning and the staff were incredibly helpful, helping me find places and get in contact with Mr Gao after I lost his card.
The bathrooms smelled truly awful. This may have been because I was throwing up so much though. Beds were hard but fine for the price range.

There are not so many options. It is okay for one to two nights. You can get to sleep and warm shower. So I do recommend this Hostel because it is still cheaper than take a hotel.
There is nothing to see in the city center. So location of hostel is not very good for travel around like Hanging Temple or Yungang Grottoes. Bus station and railway station are far away. Room is very poor and dorm expensive.

Clean beds, great shower, free wifi, close to shops and dinner and breakfast facilities. Bus to station (2 or 15) are on walking distance. We booked a room herenbecause it was the only hostel from which we could find any references in english.
Hard to find (see earlier references for directions - you really need them! The atmosphere is very boring, neon lights, no music, no cosy sitting area, just some chairs put together. The internet bill was not paid, so we couldn't access for a day. Although the beds were fine and clean, the male dorm was really messy, not cleaned at all. When we arrived the staff was having dinner outdoors and we had to wait for them to return. The staff speaks little english, but do their best with the help of a translation programme and are overall friendly.

ok, but not really clean. Good location for Datong although little bit far from the train station.
Atmosphere kind of boring...

Great location, friendly and english speaking staff, nice rooms
The common room was a bit dark, not very welcoming to sit and have a beer.

Nice location on the walking street. Kettle in room and TV with two English channels (news or documentaries). Comfortable bed.
Room and common areas were always cold even with the 'heater' (air conditioning unit) set on full. Common to sit in room in full outdoor gear to stay warm and same in communal areas which were also cold and poorly lit so very unwelcoming. Even when the communal area was full we had to ask for the heater on. Everybody was stood there inside with hat gloves and scarf on.

Excellent facilities and value for money. Staff were helpful and spoke very good English. The hotel is in a good central location, and Datong itself has a wide range of shops, bars and restaurants. The local people were pleasant and the local "food on a stick stool" was the best yet. I would also recommend the local meat filled dumplings, which were ridiculously cheap and tasty.
Shower leaked over the bedroom floor, although the staff did attend to it. Also the room was extremely cold.

It was right in the centre of the touristy part of town. there were direct buses and public transport to and from the railway station and to key tourist attractions (Yungang Caves) a five minute walk from the hostel. The hostel staff are extremely kind and helpful and are determined to make your stay as pleasant and easy as possible.
There was only toilet paper in the squat toilets not in the bathrooms in your room, this is a problem all over China though.

Nice helpful staff and good location. Free wifi and computer. Good price
Well, the main street is quite noisy and room was a little (only a little) stinky when we arrived. Later on, it was ok or may be we got used ;-). However, I would stay in this hostel again with no problem but in another room, the ones facing the backstreet.

Centralised, friendly and helpful staff
Location is hard to find. The English word is not lighted up at night. We actually walked past it when we arrived at night. If not for a passer by who called out to us, we would not have found it

Nice and quiet place to stay at Datong. As we didn't use the pick-up service at the railwaystation, it was a bit difficult to find the entrance of the hostel on the street, because it is shared with a shop. We recommand use this service.
